"Martí and I" is a historical intervention project. It is the appropriation of a political icon in order to rescue the man behind it from virtual obscurity. It is intended as a work that renounces machismo and its stronghold in historical icons and on history itself.
José Martí is the greatest literary and political figure that Cuba has ever produced. He is accredited with leading Cuba's independence from Spain in the nineteenth century. Over his life, escalating after his death in battle -- and all through the twentieth century -- Martí has come to be worshiped close to a saint. He is referred to worldwide as “The Apostle of Cuban Independence.” Even today, people living in “Communist Cuba” as well as in Miami's "Cuban community in exile" praise Martí’s revolutionary spirit and have claimed him a hero, obviously with very different, ideological interpretations. Such opposite interpretations of his persona, I believe, are a testament to Martí’s true, dual nature and the inspiration for this piece. Stay tuned for the full work in the months to come.
